Moles

What Are Moles?

Moles are common growths on the skin. Most of them are harmless. However, changes in the appearance of moles could be a warning sign of a skin cancer called melanoma. If you are concerned about any moles on your body, the team at Rapaport Dermatology can examine your skin and provide expert advice on the appropriate next steps.

The American Academy of dermatology recommends getting a full skin exam with a dermatology specialist once per year.

What Happens When I See My Doctor About My Moles?

At Rapaport Dermatology, we conduct a full body skin exam including a magnified investigation of any suspicious moles. We will make a note of the following ABCDE’s if your moles:

  • Asymmetry
  • Border irregularity
  • Color variation
  • Diameter larger than 6mm
  • Evolving (changes over time)

If your provider considers a mole is suspicious, they may advise a biopsy at the time of your visit.

Can I Protect My Skin From Getting Moles?

You can significantly reduce your risk of developing new moles and decrease the chances of developing skin cancer by vigilantly adopting the following routines:

  • Apply sunscreen
  • Wear protective clothing, including hats
  • Avoid tanning beds
  • Enjoy time in the shade
  • Prioritize annual skin checks
You should perform self-exams by looking over your entire body and noting signs of change to any moles. If you see what you think might be an abnormal mole on your body, schedule an appointment with Rapaport Dermatology as soon as possible. Staying proactive about your skin can help prevent more serious issues.
