May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!
April showers bring Skin Cancer Awareness month! April showers can bring May flowers too, but here at Rapaport Dermatology, we just happen to be more interested in skin than landscapes.
Did you know that skin cancer is the MOST common form of cancer in the US? However, skin cancer is also one of the MOST preventable forms of cancer and when detected early, skin cancer is highly treatable! We are always emphasizing sun protection and regular skin checks, but for the month of May, we are REALLY emphasizing some extra love to your skin. Here are some simple skin tips to prevent skin cancer:
- Apply a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day.
- Reapply every 2 hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
- Don’t forget your body! Apply 1 oz (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body, 30 minutes before going outside.
- Cover up with clothing, hats and sunglasses.
- Seek shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
- Avoid sun bathing and Tanning Beds!
- Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
- Get your skin checked yearly or sooner, as recommended by your Dermatologist
We often get asked, “Which sunscreen is the best for me?”. Ultimately, the best sunscreen for you is the sunscreen that you are comfortable applying everyday. Just make sure it is SPF 30 or higher, and we recommend physical blocking sunblocks that contain zinc and titanium dioxide. Some of our favorites include Elta MD UV Clear, and Elta MD UV Elements. Reapplying every 2 hours can get tricky, so we recommend Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush on Sunscreen SPF 30. This little brush contains powder sunscreen that is easy to carry and reapply on the go. We will see you at your next skin check!
